EMS Prevention / Adopt-a-Grandparent program

Overview:

The EMS Prevention program will greatly benefit from having the opportunity to accept volunteers through the University of Alabama for an “Adopt a grandparent program”.

The Problem:

Senior citizens are suffering from loneliness and isolation. Many seniors report seeing their relatives very seldom, if at all. They are a vulnerable group within our society who, at times, are taken for granted. This might lead to solitude, confusion, and a general feeling of no longer belonging within the community.

The Solution:

An Adopt-a-grandparent program will provide our elderly clients an opportunity to bring a sense of comfort to a senior citizen and pair them with a younger generation who may or may or may not have grandparents of their own. We will match college volunteers with elderly EMS Prevention clients. The goals of the program are to foster intergenerational friendships that give college student’s connection to the elderly community (along with volunteer hours) but more importantly senior citizens the companionship their hearts long for. This would consist of hourly visits that would occur on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

Activities may include but are not limited to:

  • Conversing
  • Sharing stories from different generations
  • Playing cards/games
  • Simple arts/crafts
  • Cooking/Baking
  • Have phone calls/ video calls
  • Exchanging cheerful pictures/stories/poems
  • Sending letters/cards
  • Reading

The Solution’s Value:

We strongly believe this program will immensely improve the quality of life for many of the senior citizens in our community. Through my four years of working as the coordinator for EMS Prevention, I have came across many clients that call 911 simply because they have no one else to turn to and because they are lonely. 911 is very symbolic of where a person is at that time and I believe that by implementing this volunteer program, we will touch a small amount of lives by improving our client’s mood, mental health, and overall quality of life.
